Did you know that every other breath you take comes from our oceans? Yes, that’s right, more than 50% of the world’s oxygen supply is generated by tiny marine organisms called phytoplankton. They are pretty important because, not only do phytoplankton produce more than 50% of the oxygen we breathe, but they also form the base of the marine food chain and play a significant role in the carbon cycle.

However, changes in ocean chemistry directly impact the survival of this hero species. Warming oceans, nutrient runoff, and plastic pollution threaten phytoplankton’s ability to produce the oxygen we depend on.
